I get lots of questions about breeding so here's my setup and methods. I use a 10 gallon tank with about 3 gallons of water at 80 to 82 degrees and a ph of 7.0 to 7.6. I add an ounce per gallon of my oak leaf tea. A styrofoam cup cut lengthwise at the front glass so I can observe activity with a small clay pot and plastic plant at the back of the tank for the female to hide in. I use 2 litre soda bottles for Betta containers and float the pair next to the cup. After acclimating the male, he is released first to start building his bubblenest. I will release the female just before lights out and they will usually be spawning by noon the next day. Oak leaves instead of IAL because IAL will break down after awhile and create non- benificial bacteria. The oak leaf tea seems to stimulate their spawning instincts while at the same time mellowing their aggression. I swear by it. The first year I started entering my Bettas in the IBC shows I won New Breeder Grand Champion and I contribute my success to the use of the oak leaf tea without which I would never have had such good spawns. I will also feed them Daphnia for a couple days prior to introducing them. There is no need to "condition" them for weeks before spawning.
